Give AI a task you can check

Start with one real piece of work, define a usable result and check it against the source. A polished answer is only the halfway point.

A useful first AI task is small enough to finish and specific enough to check. A service owner might need a follow-up after a customer meeting. The result is a short draft with the agreed scope, the open questions and a next action. It is not a plan to transform the whole business, and it is not permission for the assistant to invent an agreement.

Give the assistant the audience, the purpose, the facts it may use and the format you need. For example: “Draft a 150-word follow-up from these notes. Separate agreed work from questions. Leave price and delivery date out unless they appear in the notes. Do not send it.” Use fictional or redacted material while learning; check your organisation’s approved account and data rules before supplying working information.

The next step is a source check, not another request to sound more professional. Compare each price, date, name and commitment with the notes. Check that an unanswered question has not become a promise. Ask the assistant to flag unsupported statements, then verify those flags yourself. Microsoft’s guidance makes the same distinction: a draft can help you move faster, but reliability needs review against trusted sources.

AI for Work helps prepare that brief and the review steps; the actual assistant runs separately in the account you choose. Try one task, inspect the result and record what needed correcting. Reuse the instructions only when they produce something you can confidently finish and use.

A good prompt ends with a usable result and a way to check it.
